Boost Gauges Explained Measurement of turbo boost pressure can be very useful in diagnosing particular problems and also an important thing to know with a turbo car..
Poor performance, knock, coughing, and many other peculiar problems can be boost related. Knowing that your boost pressure is within spec can help eliminate it from the equation when fault finding... or perhaps even find it is the boost pressure that IS at fault. Often, the factory installed boost gauge is no more than a 'boost-o-meter' with coloured bands to show that turbo boost is present. Factory gauges don't generally mean anything and don't give you a measurement.
Turbo cars generally have fuel pressure a couple of psi higher than the boost pressure. This 'tracking' is important to maintain a positive fuel pressure with respect to boost. If the boost is higher than the fuel pressure then fuel flow can stop, leading to a 'hick-up' or 'cough' at high boost!
Using a digital boost pressure gauge along with a fuel pressure gauge can be a valuable set-up when faced with such problems, or even helpful when tuning your boost higher than spec to make sure that the two measuements track each other correctly.
