Fuel Pressure Gauges Explained
Measurement of fuel pressure can be very useful in diagnosing particular problems and also an important thing to know with turbo or nitrous cars..
Starting problems, coughing, stalls and many other peculiar problems can be fuel pressure related. Knowing that your fuel pressure is within spec can help eliminate it from the equation when fault finding... or perhaps even find it is the fuel pressure that IS at fault.
Turbo cars generally have fuel pressure a couple of psi higher than the boost pressure. This 'tracking' is important to maintain a positive fuel pressure with respect to boost. If the boost is higher than the fuel pressure then fuel flow can stop leading to a 'hick-up' or 'cough' at high boost!
On nitrous installations, jetting calculations are based on nitrous pressure and fuel pressure. Knowing what pressures you have got is crucial for fine tuning your nitrous system... without these measurements you have to run approximate jettings based on known tables. Whilst these tables are good starting points they are no substitute for actual measurements.
